THE LOWDOWN

Former world number 13 Nick Kyrgios is back inside the top 30 on tour for the first time since early 2020 after claiming his seventh ATP title at the Washington Open this month. The 27-year-old reached a first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon before a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic and if it remained to be seen how he would react it seems positively, with a recent win over Daniil Medvedev in Montreal setting out his stall as a genuine title contender in New York. World number 70 Thanasi Kokkinakis claimed his first ATP title this season on home soil at Adelaide 2 and he took that form into a stupendous run in the Men’s Doubles at the Australian Open, eventually winning the title alongside his good friend and counterpart Kyrgios.

THE PREDICTION

This is probably the draw Nick Kyrgios would least have wanted in New York as he takes on a close friend and his likely Doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis. The pair have been lighting up the doubles draws at several tournaments this season with their blockbuster bromance and their success has transferred well into both players’ singles performances. Kokkinakis recently took Jannik Sinner all the way in a three-set defeat at the Cincinnati Masters but Kyrgios is a genuine title contender in New York after his exploits at Wimbledon and more recently in Montreal and Washington. This could be fun but it could also be flat if Kyrgios cannot find the required desire to beat a friend. However, a recent straight sets win over Alex de Minaur suggests he can still get the job done against fellow Aussies he respects. Back Kyrgios to win outright and consider adding one or even two tiebreaks between two hard-hitters.
