THE LOWDOWN
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has won a major title in each of the past four seasons, with this her last opportunity to make that five-straight years. The 24-year-old won her first Grand Slam here in 2018, famously at Serena Williams’ expense, and her third in 2020 against Victoria Azarenka either side of her two Australian Open titles in 2019 and 2021. Osaka has struggled since her latest return to the tour, although a run to the Miami Open final back in March with barely any run-up is proof of what she is capable at any given moment.
World number 19 Danielle Collins is playing her first tournament since a shock defeat in the first round of the Lausanne Open early last month and she takes a three-match losing streak into New York. The 28-year-old reached her first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open this season before defeat to Ash Barty, breaking the top 20 for a first time to become American number one, but she has struggled to stay fit and her form has suffered as a result. Collins has never made it past the third round at the US Open but she has thrived in a few seasons at the Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
Two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka is clearly the most dangerous unseeded player to draw in the first round of the US Open and Danielle Collins will be rueing her poor luck that she must face the former world number one on her return to the tour. Osaka beat Collins in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open back in March, on her way to the final, to take a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head record. Osaka has yet to drop a set to Collins but it is wise to take her outright here with both players’ current abilities questionable.
