Former world number 12 Qiang Wang overcame Yanina Wickmayer in three sets on Monday to get a reasonably promising Chennai Open campaign underway. The 30-year-old has endured a season of peaks and troughs, starting with a stunning victory over Coco Gauff at the Australian Open but more recently petering out somewhat despite recently reaching the semi-finals of the Prague Open in July. This looks a winnable round of 16 fixture for the Chinese, though, as she takes on world number 185 Nao Hibino. 27-year-old Hibino qualified well this week to make the Chennai main draw and she recently upset an out-of-sorts Barbora Krejcikova at the aforementioned Prague Open for one of her best results in years. The Japanese beat Qiang Wang three weeks ago in the US Open qualifiers to throw some shade on this first tour-level meeting between the two but back Wang to win at least a set as the just-about likelier victor here.
