THE PREDICTION

World number 40 Katerina Siniakova took the first set from seventh seed Qinwen Zheng in the second round of the Miami Open last time out but she was forced to retire in the third, with this her first match back on tour. The 27-year-old has enjoyed perhaps her best, most consistent singles form over the past 12 months to pick up two WTA titles on grass at Bad Homburg and on hardcourt at the Jiangxi Open but her best Grand Slam run was a last 16 exit at Roland-Garros in 2019 to prove her abilities across surfaces.

World number 66 Nadia Podoroska has worked tirelessly over the past few seasons in her attempt to get back to a career-high of 36th, achieved after her stunning run to the semi-finals in Paris back in 2020. The 27-year-old won a clay Challenger title in Mexico late last month but she brings a three-match losing streak at tour level into Madrid to leave this a tough call. Given this is Siniakova’s first match in a month, back Podoroska to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: NADIA PODOROSKA TO WIN A SET
