THE PREDICTION

Former world number 36 Nadia Podoroska suffered an injury in the first round here in New York last season that saw her miss almost an entire year from the tour. The Argentine grabbed her first tour-level win since her comeback at the Poland Open late last month on her favoured clay, on which she remarkably reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2020 on her debut, but this looks a match too soon against Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova. Former world number 26 Schmiedlova reached the third round here back in 2015 and she has won in the first round of her last two Grand Slams in Paris and London. However, her last tour-level win came in the first round at Wimbledon to suggest there may be a crack for Podoroska to sneak through. The sensible option is backing Schmiedlova to win at least a set here but the shrewd one could be backing Podoroska to do so instead.
