28-year-old Danielle Collins is the American number one on the WTA tour and the highest-ranked American tennis player in the world right now at her career-high ranking of eighth. She finished runner-up to Ash Barty at the Australian Open back in January in her first Grand Slam final and she reached the quarter-finals of the Miami Open more recently, losing to a resurgent Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals. Collins returns from an injury lay-off with little time to get some clay practice in her legs and there is the slightest scent of an upset here against former world number 27 Monica Puig, who is back from a much longer injury lay-off playing her first match on tour since the first round of Roland-Garros in 2020. The Puerto Rican famously won Gold at the Rio Olympic Games back in 2016 but she claimed her first WTA title on clay at the Strasbourg Open back in 2014 and she will be a serious anomaly in this match, especially in the first set.
