THE LOWDOWN

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

After a season or so in the wilderness we are finally seeing the version of Miomir Kecmanovic that was promised some time ago. The 22-year-old shocked world number six Matteo Berrettini on Wednesday over three tight sets to reach the quarter-finals of Indian Wells for a second time after first achieving the feat in 2019. The world number 61 set a career-high of 38th last season and he should be able to smash that on what is now a hugely promising clay swing next month.

TAYLOR FRITZ

World number 20 Taylor Fritz came back from a set down to beat Alex de Minaur in three tight sets on Wednesday. The 24-year-old enjoyed a run even better than this last October at the delayed Indian Wells where he beat three top 10 players to reach the semi-finals before losing to eventual runner-up Nikoloz Basilashvili. Fritz has since finished runner-up to Marin Cilic at the St. Petersburg Open and reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in a five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open in January.

THE PREDICTION

Miomir Kecmanovic should not be underestimated after taking out Matteo Berrettini in three sets on Wednesday, with a three-set victory over in-form Marin Cilic also an excellent result this campaign. The Serb has found a new lease of life in 2022 after reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open in a similar story to Taylor Fritz, who also suffered some poor form over 2020 and early 2021 before rediscovering his best level here last October. Fritz was the winner of their only previous meeting in straight sets at the Atlanta Open in 2019 and the backing of a likely partisan crowd makes taking him to win at least a set as the likelier semi-finalist the sensible move here.
