THE LOWDOWN
The atmosphere may feel a little flat on Day 2 of the Laver Cup, particularly in this opening match, after the emotional outpouring late on Friday as the O2 said goodbye to Roger Federer on behalf of the world. This is an excellent opening fixture to try and remedy that, though, between good friends off the court Felix Auger-Aliassime and Matteo Berrettini.
World number 13 Auger-Aliassime is a tough man to pin down form-wise right now but he won his maiden ATP title at the Rotterdam Open back in February in similar conditions to these, although not with tens of thousands of fans present. The Canadian beat Carlos Alcaraz in three sets at the Davis Cup last week to put some poor recent performances behind him and he will be eager to perform for Team World after their encouraging start to proceedings on Friday.
World number 15 Matteo Berrettini won back-to-back ATP titles on his favoured grass this summer at the Stuttgart Open and Queen’s, with his current ranking not indicative of the levels of tennis he has found at times in 2022. The Italian will garner most of the support here with Team Europe at home and he knows how to use that energy to his advantage better than most.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a proper battle on Saturday if their previous match is anything to by, with Matteo Berrettini edging out Felix Auger-Aliassime in last season’s edition of the Laver Cup in Boston via a deciding tiebreak. Whilst Auger-Aliassime’s best tennis probably comes on a hardcourt the Canadian’s best form has so far looked fairly random this season and the indoor conditions here at the O2 probably favour Berrettini’s hammer serve. The Italian leads Auger-Aliassime 3-1 in their head-to-head record but he has struggled to find his top gear since contracting covid-19 on the eve of Wimbledon this summer. Back Berrettini to win at least a set inside an accumulator, or for this match to go the distance on its own.
