MATTEO ARNALDI – Second round of 16 in last three Grand Slams
23-year-old Matteo Arnaldi is clearly a player for the big occasion after upsetting Madrid champion Andrey Rublev, sixth seed here in Paris, in straight sets on Friday. The Italian will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 34th for his efforts so far, matching his superb run to the round of 16 at the US Open last summer, and can break the top 30 with victory here. Arnaldi helped Italy to the Davis Cup title late last season, proving his grit in pressure situations.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS – 2021 runner-up and three-time Monte-Carlo champion (2021, 2022, 2024)
World number nine Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets on Friday to produce his most blistering display yet this campaign. The 25-year-old briefly burst into his most sumptuous form on clay to win the Monte-Carlo Masters for a third time last month but it had been a troubling few weeks coming into Paris before clear improvements here.
Tsitsipas set a career-high ATP world ranking of third after finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros in 2021, taking the first two sets form the Serb before a capitulation that has left its mark on his once bulletproof confidence.
MATTEO ARNALDI VS STEFANOS TSITSIPAS PREDICTION
This is clearly a very dangerous draw for Stefanos Tsitsipas as he faces Matteo Arnaldi for the first time, with the Italian already upsetting one clay-court Masters champion in Andrey Rublev. The element of surprise is diminished for 23-year-old Arnaldi but he has risen to the test in practically all of his high-pressure matches so far in his young career and he will be well aware of his opponent’s brittle confidence.
Tsitsipas remains the solid favourite on his performances so far in Paris but four or even five sets seem likelier than three. Back the Greek to reach the quarter-finals.
