21-year-old Matteo Arnaldi rode his luck into the Next Gen ATP Finals this week as the replacement for Holger Rune. The Italian could be this year’s surprise package, just as Sebastian Baez was last year, but without a tour-level win to his name it would be a huge achievement to win a match here in Milan. Arnaldi set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 134th this week after some recent success at Challenger level.
21-year-old Brandon Nakashima is one of only two players at the Next Gen ATP Finals with a title to his name after he grabbed his maiden trophy on home soil at the San Diego Open this summer. The American would be considerably higher-ranked than his current world number 49 after enjoying his best run at Wimbledon this season, where ranking points were not awarded, but a career-high of 43rd achieved last month is a great benchmark for next season.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a fairly straightforward match for Brandon Nakashima on paper but tennis constantly throws up situations like this that often go against the grain. 21-year-old Matteo Arnaldi comes in to the Next Gen ATP Finals seeking a first tour-level win after some recent strength on the Challenger circuit and where better to do that than on home soil in Milan. The perhaps over-cautious pick is for Nakashima to take at least two sets in the shortened five-set format and leave the result up to chance – even though the American is well capable of taking this in three.
