THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Martina Trevisan can break the top 50 for a first time with one more win here after she won her maiden WTA title at the Rabat Open last weekend. The Italian is riding a seven-match winning streak into the third round of Roland-Garros after stunning Magda Linette, who had just come off a career-best ranking win over Ons Jabeur, in straight sets and she has pedigree at this tournament with a memorable run to the quarter-finals here in 2020 ended by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. World number 127 Daria Saville grabbed a mini-upset against an out-of-sorts Petra Kvitova on Wednesday but the Aussie, better known formerly as Daria Gavrilova. Is clearly working her way back to somewhere near her previous level as s former world number 20.

Saville, also 28, has never made it past the third round of Roland-Garros and that versus Trevisan’s winning streak suggests the Italian should be backed to edge through into the second week here. This is certainly one of the tougher matches to call on Friday, though, and taking Trevisan to win at least a set would be the sensible concession.
