Former world number one Victoria Azarenka overcame Ashlyn Krueger in three sets on Tuesday for a fairly choppy start to the US Open. The 33-year-old finished runner-up to Naomi Osaka here as recently as 2020 but she has struggled to find form anywhere near reminiscent of that this season, with recent defeats to rising stars Emma Raducanu and Xiyu Wang looking somewhat symbolic. Another young talent in Marta Kostyuk looks a serious challenge here in their first tour meeting, particularly as the Ukrainian looks to finally be finding some consistent tennis after months of disarray. The 20-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Granby Open last week before pulling out to rest ahead of the US Open and that looks to have paid off so far with a straight-sets victory over Mayar Sherif on Tuesday. Azarenka is far from her best at this moment in time and backing Kostyuk to win at least a set looks the shrewd move.
