World number six Maria Sakkari is riding a three-match losing streak into the second round of the Guadalajara Open, having received a bye as the fourth seed here. The 27-year-old’s defeat to Donna Vekic in the first round of San Diego last week looks a little better since the Croat finished runner-up but Sakkari’s form has been concerning for some time, perhaps ever since reaching her first Masters final at Indian Wells back in March. The Greek possesses all the power and ability required to claim more than just her one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open but her confidence is seemingly shot and this looks a really tough opener against Marta Kostyuk. World number 58 Kostyuk conceded just four games to Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Monday for a seriously impressive first round win and the Ukrainian has, notably, lost to eventual finalists in each of her last three tournaments.
Sakkari beat Kostyuk in straight sets last summer at the US Open but she is a different prospect this time around. The sensible move is backing Sakkari to at least win a set here but the shrewd one could be taking Kostyuk to take at least one of her own.
