THE LOWDOWN

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

World number 41 Marketa Vondrousova is yet to drop a set this campaign after a great performance against a tough foe in Liudmila Samsonova on Thursday. The 22-year-old went one further last season in a round of 16 exit here but she will have a hard time emulating her best Grand Slam showing any time soon after a stunning run to the Roland-Garros final in 2019. Vondrousova is perhaps most comfortable on the clay but her game is well-suited to hardcourts too, with a Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games last season to prove it.

ARYNA SABALENKA

World number two Aryna Sabalenka had to fight back from a set down for the second-successive match in Melbourne with a poor display against Xinyu Wang let off the hook. The 23-year-old is struggling to control her main weapon, her world-class serve, with five aces and 19 double faults likely to be severely punished by any player inside the top 50 on tour. Sabalenka lost in the semi-finals of Wimbledon and the US Open last season, to the eventual runner-up on both occasions in Karolina Pliskova and Leylah Fernandez, respectively.

THE PREDICTION

Time is running out for opponents to make the most of Aryna Sabalenka’s faltering game as the Belarussian continues to play herself into form. This is a really tough test, though, against Marketa Vondrousova who is also a player that improves with every round. Sabalenka has won the last two meetings between the two, including last season at the Miami Open, to lead their head-to-head record 2-1 but the winner of this match could go either way. Taking both to take a set is a reasonable risk here but Vondrousova to win at least one is the sensible option if you are adding this match to an accumulator.
