21-year-old Matteo Arnaldi has been awarded a wildcard by the Italian Open to make his ATP tour debut here on one of the most prestigious stages in tennis. The Italian has performed well on the Challenger circuit in recent weeks to earn what will be by far the toughest match of his young career against former world number three Marin Cilic. 33-year-old Cilic performed well at the Madrid Open last week, taking the first set against defending champion Alexander Zverev before a three-set defeat in the second round, and he is likely to overpower Arnaldi here despite clay remaining his weakest surface. Take Cilic to win outright here, though, with the Croat occasionally caught cold at the start of tournaments – especially against players he should be beating comfortably.
