MARIN CILIC
Former world number three Marin Cilic made short work of the departing Gilles Simon on Saturday, conceding just five games to the 37-year-old against the Paris crowds’ wishes. The 33-year-old is a former Grand Slam champion from the 2014 US Open who also finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018, to Roger Federer on both occasions. Cilic has twice reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros but clay remains his least effective surface. The Croat made it 20 ATP titles for his career last season with wins on grass at the Stuttgart Open and on hard at the St. Petersburg Open.
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number two Daniil Medvedev has gone under the radar at Roland-Garros so far in what is only his second tournament back since a hernia operation that saw him miss two months from the tour. The 26-year-old has been vocal about his discomfort on the clay but he is yet to drop a set in Paris, with a straight-sets victory over in-form Miomir Kecmanovic on Saturday particularly impressive. Medvedev is the current US Open champion after beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets last September and he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in five thrilling sets at the Australian Open this January.
THE PREDICTION
Not many people would have predicted Daniil Medvedev reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros after he lost in straight sets to Richard Gasquet in his first match back on tour at the Geneva Open two weeks ago but the Russian has been vastly impressive so far. The 26-year-old could well be the dark horse in this part of the draw with all of the tournament favourites battling it out in the other half and with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev struggling in parts so far. World number 23 Marin Cilic will be a stern test for the Russian but Medvedev leads the Croat 3-0 in their head-to-head record; including two meetings last season in five sets at Wimbledon and in straight sets to win the Davis Cup Finals in November. Neither player is at their best on this surface but Medvedev is finding a way. Back the Russian to win outright here, with straight-sets probable but four too possible to confidently risk.
