World number 17 Marin Cilic is yet to drop a set at the US Open, where he won his only Grand Slam title in 2014, after an impressive result over in-form Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Thursday. The 33-year-old has found some excellent form this season, throwing back the years to reach the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in June on his weakest surface, and we will never know how far he could have gone at Wimbledon in that vein after he contracted covid-19 at the tournament. This looks like one of the matches of the round against in-form Dan Evans, who looked in excellent shape against James Duckworth in a four-set victory that felt more like a three. The world number 23 stunned Cilic in four sets at the Australian Open back in 2017 on his way to the round of 16 there and he emulated that here last season with an excellent run to the second week in New York.
Evans has exhibited some his best tennis over the last month or so, reaching the semi-finals of the Canada Masters before defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta, and a 1-0 lead over Cilic in their head-to-head should bolster his resolve. This could be incredibly tight, so back the brit to win at least two sets as the just-about likelier of two very capable victors.
