MARIE BOUZKOVA
World number 77 Marie Bouzkova looks to be rediscovering her promising level from 2020 with two impressive results so far at the Madrid Open. The 23-year-old set a career-high of 46th just over two years ago and she reached a third tour final at the Guadalajara Open back in February, finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens in three sets. Bouzkova beat an out-of-sorts Karolina Pliskova on Thursday and then came back from a set down to beat Dayana Yastremska well to reach the round of 16.
EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
World number 45 Ekaterina Alexandrova took out the 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday and backed that up with an assured victory over in-form Nuria Parrizas-Diaz on Saturday. The 27-year-old won her only WTA title to date at the Shenzhen Open in 2020 but she finished runner-up to Anett Kontaveit at the Kremlin Cup late last season.
THE PREDICTION
This is a huge opportunity for one of Marie Bouzkova or Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the quarter-final of a Masters tournament and with so many seeds falling, one each by their hands, who knows how far the winner could go? 23-year-old Bouzkova is probably the more comfortable on the clay, with last week’s Women’s Double title at the Istanbul Open some excellent form to take into Madrid but Alexandrova has needed the likes of Anett Kontaveit in Stuttgart or eventual champion Belinda Bencic in Charleston to beat her recently. Back the Russian to win at least a set here as the likelier of two capable winners and leave the rets up to chance.
