In-form world number 77 Marie Bouzkova became the latest player to shock out-of-sorts Karolina Pliskova with an excellent straight-sets victory on Thursday. The Czech qualified well this week after gaining plenty of clay-court practice at last week’s Istanbul Open, where she won the Women’s Doubles event alongside Sara Sorribes Tormo. 23-year-old Bouzkova recently finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the Guadalajara Open.
DAYANA YASTREMSKA
World number 92 Dayana Yastremska was in control of her opening Madrid Open match against Greet Minnen before the Belgian retired in the second set. The 21-year-old set a career-high of 21st back in 2020 after winning two of her total three WTA titles the year before, including on clay at the Strasbourg Open. Yastremska finished runner-up to Shuai Zhang at the Lyon Open back in February.
THE PREDICTION
This is a great opportunity for either of Marie Bouskova and Dayana Yastremska to reach a rare round of 16 at a Masters tournament and there are more questions than answers in a high-stakes first meeting between the two. 23-year-old Bouzkova has the better overall form on clay in very recent times but both players have reached a WTA tour final this season and this could come very close indeed. Given her opening win over former world number one Pliskova, back Bouzkova to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance.
