26-year-old Maria Sakkari was stunned in the first round of the Eastbourne International alongside many other top seeds this week, losing from a set up to Anhelina Kalinina. The Greek did make the semi-finals of the Berlin Open the week before but it has so far been another frustrating season of near misses. Sakkari reached the semi-finals of two Grand Slams last season, losing to the eventual champions of both in Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros and Emma Raducanu at the US Open, and the world number five still owns just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open. Sakkari has been gifted one of the more winnable fixtures in the draw after world number 571 Zoe Hives qualified for a Wimbledon debut via a walkover in qualifying. There is always a small amount of creeping doubt about Sakkari, especially against players she should be beating, but on this occasion the Greek can be backed to win in comfortable straight sets.
