World number seven Maria Sakkari beat Danka Kovinic in straight sets on Saturday to reach her first tour final since finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells back in March. The 27-year-old owns just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open and it would do her ailing confidence the world of good to claim a second here as she aims to qualify for the WTA Finals for a second-successive season. World number 74 Mayar Sherif is through to her first ever WTA tour final after taking out in-form Ana Bogdan on Saturday and she will likely garner much of the support here as the severe underdog. The Egyptian deserves her place in this final after suffering several injuries at key moments of her career so far but Sakkari beat her in straight sets in their only previous encounter on tour at last year’s Qatar Open and backing the Greek to win outright looks the sensible option. Three sets seem likelier than two, though, and that could be a valuable alternative.
