World number three Maria Sakkari is an excellent clay-courter but she was caught a little cold last week against Laura Siegemund in the first round of the Stuttgart Open. The 26-year-old was forced to retire from the second set against the German veteran in her first match on clay this season and that makes leaving this enticing match with Madison Keys out of an accumulator the wise call. World number 22 Madison Keys won a first clay-court match at the Charleston Open at the start of the month before losing in straight sets to eventual champion Belinda Bencic. The 27-year-old won her seventh WTA tour title at the start of the season in Adelaide before a huge run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open was ended by eventual champion Ash Barty. Keys’ form has always been erratic but she should have a solid chance here, despite Sakkari leading this head-to-head record 2-0 with wins at the 2020 Australian Open and last season’s Qatar Open. The Greek should be able to come through outright but backing Keys to win at least a set, her first against Sakkari, looks a shrewd move here.
