World number 189 Maria Carle is a new name on the tour who qualified well this week before ousting German youngster Eva Lys, also 22, in three sets on Monday. The Argentine will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 176th after claiming her first tour win but she has displayed a higher level before now, beating both Yulia Putintseva and Elena Rybakina in the Billie Jean King Cup last season. 21-year-old Anastasia Potapova is a much tougher prospect here than Lys, though, as the Russian comes off a strong run to the Lausanne Open semi-finals. Potapova is up to a career-high 63rd in the WTA world rankings after beating fellow Russian Varvara Gracheva on Monday and she looks the solid favourite to come through here. Carle has played well enough to warrant taking Potapova at outright here, though.
