The California native will be well-received and at his most effective on a US hardcourt, with a recent win over David Goffin in Cincinnati proof of his ability on this surface. The 29-year-old tends to come into form at this time of year, with back-to-back round of 16 runs at the Paris Masters over the last two seasons including victories over the likes of Matteo Berrettini and Frances Tiafoe. World number 89 Tomas Martin Etcheverry would much prefer this first encounter on his favoured clay but the 23-year-old won his first tour-level hardcourt match against fellow Argentine Facundo Mena on Monday. Giron should have more than enough to stop Etcheverry’s run here though, with straight sets likely but probably unwise to back.
