THE LOWDOWN
24-year-old Frances Tiafoe set a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th this week after some strong runs over the summer, including reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon before a five-set epic with David Goffin. The American reached the round of 16 here last season via a stunning victory over then world number seven Andrey Rublev and he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of Wimbledon before that to further prove himself a big-occasion player. Tiafoe set his best Grand Slam showing at the Australian Open with a breakthrough run to the quarter-finals in 2019. World number 56 Marcos Giron broke the top 50 for a first time this season back in May after some strong work in Acapulco and Rome.
THE PREDICTION
There could be sets in this match for both Americans but it would be a surprise to see Frances Tiafoe lose in the first round in conditions that suit him. The 24-year-old will be desperate for more after his deep run last season was cut short by Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets. Tiafoe narrowly missed out on the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and recent three-setters with the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz and Matteo Berrettini suggest he is up for the big occasion once again. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after Tiafoe beat Giron in straight sets back in April and the 22nd seed can be backed to come through outright.
