THE PREDICTION

World number 132 Marco Cecchinato came back from two sets down to fantastically beat Pablo Andujar on Tuesday, handing the beleaguered Spaniard two bagels in the third and fifth. That is the 29-year-old’s second win of a poor season so far but it could awaken the best in the Italian, who went to five against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round last season before defeat. Cecchinato famously beat Novak Djokovic here in 2018 on his way to the semi-finals in 2018 before losing to eventual runner-up Dominic Thiem and he is a creditable threat to the 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz. 25-year-old Hurkacz beat Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri on Tuesday but he has occasionally been caught cold on his least effective surface.

A run to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open is proof of what the Pole can do at his best but Cecchinato will be well up for this second meeting with Hurkacz, who won their first meeting at the 2019 Eastbourne International on his more favoured grass. Backing Hurkacz to win outright looks sensible here but perhaps the shrewd option is taking both players to win at least a set and leaving the winner up to chance.
