Former world number seven Madison Keys will feel a huge sense of unfinished business at Flushing Meadows every year since finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens here in 2017. The 27-year-old enjoyed a deep run to the Cincinnati Open semi-finals last week before defeat in three tight sets to eventual runner-up Petra Kvitova and she also made the last four at the Australian Open back in January before losing to the eventual champion Ash Barty.

World number 86 Dayana Yastremska is riding a five-match losing streak into the US Open since her run to the quarter-finals at the Birmingham Classic back in June. The former world number 21 has plenty of time to rediscover her best abilities at 22 years old but she has yet to recover from losing six months of the tour after a controversial doping ban. The Ukrainian has reached the second week of a major before, at Wimbledon in 2019, but Madison Keys looks to be set for a deep run this fortnight and she can be backed to start strong with a straight-sets victory.
