THE PREDICTION
This looks a proper blockbuster on Friday between two top American players in world number 20 Madison Keys and number 12 Coco Gauff. 27-year-old Keys finished runner-up at the US Open to Sloane Stephens in 2017 before suffering a few seasons in the wilderness more recently but the former world number seven reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January before defeat to the eventual champion Ash Barty. A run to the semi-finals at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago included victories over the two most recent Grand Slam champions in Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina and she battled fiercely on Wednesday to oust Camila Giorgi in three tight sets. 18-year-old Coco Gauff reached her first Grand Slam final in June before defeat to Swiatek but she has started another promising campaign in New York with two straight-set wins.
Keys beat Gauff in three sets in their first meeting in the semi-finals of Adelaide 2, where she won the sixth WTA title of her career. This is a tough call on recent form, with Keys enjoying the better August results in similar conditions, and also because the home crowd will give a lot of support to both players whilst generally pulling towards Gauff. The teenager has never reached the round of 16 at the US Open but winning this huge test will make her a genuine title contender. The sensible option is probably backing Keys to win at least a set but otherwise take the risk on Gauff to step-up once again to win outright.
