World number 78 Mackenzie McDonald overcame a spirited Kaichi Uchida on Tuesday, taking out the home hopeful in three sets. The 27-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Korea Open last week before falling foul of fellow American Aleksandar Kovacevic’s breakthrough week but he was solid enough to reach that stage and he will fancy his chances in this first meeting with Soonwoo Kwon. 24-year-old Kwon is better than his current ATP world ranking of 120th suggests and the South Korean proved that on Tuesday by stunning sixth-seed Alex de Minaur in straight sets. Kwon was disappointing on home soil in Seoul last week but a recent defeat of Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Davis Cup was an incredible performance that deserves respect here. Three sets are always likely with hard-grafting McDonald involved but back Kwon to take at least one of them to leave the victor up to chance.
