THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Frances Tiafoe set a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th this week built largely upon his incredible run to the semi-finals of the US Open last September, where he came as close as anyone to beating eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in five sets. The American comes into Dallas a little cold, though, with his last match a four-set defeat to Karen Khachanov over two weeks ago at the Australian Open and world number 59 Mackenzie McDonald is in some excellent form if his own. The 27-year-old stunned an admittedly injured Rafael Nadal in the second round in Melbourne last month before succumbing to his own injury in the third but he conceded just three games to Fernando Verdasco in the first round here to get his campaign up and running strongly. Tiafoe is the obvious favourite on paper but there are enough outside factors here to suggest an upset could be on. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but they have not faced each other since 2019 and both have significantly improved since. The sensible option is backing Tiafoe to earn at least a set here but the shrewd risk is taking the same option in favour of McDonald.
