World number 174 Lucas Pouille grabbed the first big result of his comeback from injury with a straight-sets shock win over Karen Khachanov. The 28-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th back in 2018 after a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open was ended by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Pouille’s most recent of five ATP titles came soon after at the Montpellier Open.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month for a second Masters title overall. The 23-year-old took that form into the Barcelona Open before losing to Carlos Alcaraz for a third time out of three, this time in three sets in the quarter-finals. Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros last season after taking the first two sets in his first Grand Slam final.
THE PREDICTION
This should be something of a procession for world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas against Lucas Pouille at this stage of the Frenchman’s comeback from a lengthy injury spell but a straight-sets victory over Karen Khachanov makes things interesting here. Tsitsipas dropped a set to Ilya Ivashka in his previous opening round at the Barcelona Open and he could be caught out here if Pouille starts aggressive. Three sets is possible but unlikely all the same with Tsitsipas leading this head-to-head 2-0 having not yet dropped a set to the former world number 10. The Greek should be taking this in straight sets but you could be forgiven for taking him outright inside an accumulator.
