World number 90 Alexandre Muller had endured a tough start to 2024 before an excellent run to the round of 16 at the Italian Open, where he stunned Madrid champion Andrey Rublev in three sets to back up upsets over Arthur Fils and Marton Fucsovics.
The 27-year-old struggled to maintain that intensity in a round of 16 exit to Pavel Kotov at the Lyon Open this week but home advantage should aid him just edging through this first encounter with Luca Nardi, who has struggled since winning the Napoli Challenger in late March.
World number 72 Nardi is one of a handful of players to have upset out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic this season, doing so at Indian Wells en-route to a career-best round of 16 exit there, but victory in Napoli proved his credentials on clay too.
