THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Jack Draper will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 121st when the rankings renew on Monday after winning his fourth Challenger event this season earlier this month. The Brit reached the quarter-finals of Queen’s Club last season on grass before taking the opening set against Novak Djokovic in a four-set defeat at Wimbledon and he was impressive at the Miami Open last month before a tight defeat to Cam Norrie in the second round. World number 27 Lorenzo Sonego is the more comfortable clay-courter here, though, and the Italian found some his best form this time last season in a run to the semi-finals of the Italian Open where he too stole a set in defeat to Djokovic. The 26-year-old has struggled to impose himself on most tournaments this season but he has the ability on this surface to eventually come through a tough first meeting with Draper. The Brit’s powerful serve will be favoured by Madrid’s conditions and three sets would not be a surprise here. Taking Sonego to win outright is a sensible concession.
