Despite riding a four-match losing streak into the Monte-Carlo Open, 26-year-old Lorenzo Sonego has reached his career-high ATP world ranking of 21st first set this time last season. The Italian is at his best on the clay, with an impressive run to the semi-finals of the Rome Masters last spring eventually ended by Novak Djokovic in three sets and a second ATP title won at the Sardegna Open. World number 42 Ilya Ivashka is a competent player on clay but the Belarussian would prefer a first meeting with Sonego on a hardcourt, on which he won his first ATP title at the Winston-Salem Open last season. The 28-year-old has not played since a defeat to Soonwoo Kwon at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February and he is likely to struggle transitioning to a new surface with little match practice.
