THE PREDICTION
World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the Italian Open last Sunday after a strong campaign in Rome. The 23-year-old reached his first and only Grand Slam final to date here last season, where he took the first two sets from Djokovic before the Serb fought back to win a record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title. The rest of Tsitsipas’ season was hampered by that result but after elbow surgery over the winter break he has come back swinging on clay, successfully defending his Monte-Carlo Masters title last month for a second Masters title on the surface.
This could be a thrilling battle on clay between two players who took Novak Djokovic to five sets at Roland-Garros last season but world number 57 Lorenzo Musetti retired from his round of 16 clash with Alexander Zverev last time out. The Italian’s fitness is therefore questionable and he has form for pulling out of tough matches before, so leaving this out of an accumulator is wise. Musetti took Tsitsipas to three sets in the semi-finals of last season’s Lyon Open but the Greek has won both of their matches comfortably enough. Back Tsitsipas to win outright, with four sets a distinct possibility.
