World number 60 Liudmila Samsonova has been struggling to live up to the heights of her breakthrough 2021 season, where she won her maiden WTA 500 title at the Berlin Open, but she grabbed a first win on tour in over a month with an impressive result over Elise Mertens. The 23-year-old has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since taking Iga Swiatek all the way in a tight three-set semi-final at the Stuttgart Open back in April but that is as good as she can be when on song. World number 69 Ajla Tomljanovic is also far better than her current ranking and she will feel very hard done by after making a second-successive quarter-final at Wimbledon earlier this month and yet not see the ranking points awarded. The 28-year-old beat Sloane Stephens handily on Tuesday in keeping with her recent strong form and this should be a really entertaining tussle between two players with games for the top 40 at least. Tomljanovic won their only previous encounter at the Kremlin Cup last season, in straight sets, so backing her to win at least one here seems the sensible way to lean in a tight one.
