16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova will turn 17 at the Madrid Open if she reaches the latter stages of the tournament and it would not be the biggest surprise if the Czech prodigy does. The world number 205 reached the round of 16 at the Miami Open last month with victories over Elise Mertens and Victoria Azarenka and she challenged eventual Charleston Open champion Belinda Bencic after a first win on clay this season over Ana Konjuh. This will be a fascinating first encounter between two players separated by 20 years of experience as Estonian veteran Kaia Kanepi comes from a strong qualifying campaign. World number 55 Kanepi turned professional in 1999, five years before Fruhvirtova was born, and reached her first WTA tour final way back in 2006. Two of her four WTA titles have come on her favoured clay and she has twice exited Roland-Garros at the quarter-final stage, with a run to the last eight of the Australian Open this year completing her set of Grand Slam quarter-finals.
Kanepi should be coming through this encounter in straight sets on her best surface but Fruhvirtova is powered by raw talent and that bullish self-belief that has seen plenty of teenagers take the tour by storm over the last few years. Backing Kanepi to win at least a set is the wise move, although the Estonian should be able to come through in the end.
