LEYLAH FERNANDEZ
19-year-old Leylah Fernandez will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 18th after a three-set tussle with Andrea Petkovic on Friday. The Canadian lost her opening match on clay this season at the Charleston Open a few weeks ago but she certainly has the game to succeed on this surface in time. Fernandez successfully defended her Monterrey Open title in February but the stand-out achievement of her young career so far remains finishing runner-up at last season’s US Open.
JIL TEICHMANN
World number 35 Jil Teichmann looked in great shape for a straight-sets victory over Petra Kvitova on Friday. The 24-year-old produced a stunning run to the final of the Cincinnati Open last season before losing to Ash Barty but she is at her best on the clay, on which she won her first WTA title at the Palermo Open in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Teichmann won the only previous meeting between these two players in a Fed Cup rubber back in 2020 and she is certainly the more practised clay-courter of the two here. Fernandez, however, certainly has the potential to be very special on this surface with a few likenesses to fellow left-hander Rafael Nadal to her game. This is a really tough call and perhaps taking three sets could be the valuable move here but it is especially hard to see Fernandez losing in two, so take the Canadian to win at least a set.
