World number 18 Leylah Fernandez passed a serious test on Friday with a three-set victory over in-form Belinda Bencic. The 19-year-old famously reached the final of the US Open last season with a series of lights-out performances against the likes of Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka before finishing runner-up to Emma Raducanu and she should be considered a genuine contender for the title from here on in. Fernandez finished runner-up to Clara Tauson as a junior at the 2019 Australian Open before winning the Girls’ Singles title at Roland-Garros in 2019.
AMANDA ANISIMOVA
World number 28 Amanda Anisimova came back from a set down to beat an injury-hampered Karolina Muchova in a high-quality battle on Friday. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene with a stunning run to the semi-finals here back in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty in three sets. Anismova finished runner-up to Rebeka Masarova here as a junior in 2016 before winning the US Open Girls’ singles title a year later.
THE PREDICTION
There are plenty of similarities between two current and future stars here. Both Leylah Fernandez and Amanda Anisimova are former Girls’ Singles Grand Slam champions who have since produced stunning deep runs at Grand Slams, Fernandez at last season’s US Open and Anisimova here back in 2019, and they meet for a second time in what looks set to be a storied head-to-head over the next decade at the top of the sport.
The pair won a set each in their only previous meeting earlier this season at Indian Wells, before Anisimova was forced to retire from the third set with an injury.
