THE LOWDOWN
18-year-old Coco Gauff looks set to break the top 10 on the WTA tour for a first time this fortnight if she can beat her best run in New York, set in a third round exit to Naomi Osaka here in 2019. Since then, the teenager has won her first two WTA titles and reached a first Grand Slam final at this season’s Roland-Garros before losing to world number one Iga Swiatek. Gauff has, realistically, lost just one match this season to a significantly weaker opponent and her uber-consistent performances mean a decent draw and a better handling of the pressure from an adoring home crowd are all that really stands in her way of a first major title this fortnight. Doing so would emulate her idol Serena Williams, who won her first Grand Slam title here aged 18 back in 1999.
THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Leolia Jeanjean set a career-high WTA world ranking of 138th last month after reaching the third round at Roland-Garros on her Grand Slam debut. The Frenchwoman qualified well this week in New York without dropping a set to pose a creditable threat to a slow start by Coco Gauff, so the American will do well to play as she means to continue. Straight sets should do it here but you could be forgiven for treating this opener with caution with an outright instead.
