THE PREDICTION
World number 23 Jelena Ostapenko claimed her maiden WTA title at Roland-Garros back in 2017 but a Masters title is still missing from her trophy cabinet. The 25-year-old was in serious form earlier this season, winning the Dubai Tennis Championships before losing in the semi-finals of the Qatar Masters, but she has fluctuated a fair bit since to lose in two further finals in Eastbourne and Seoul amongst a few surprising early exits. Ostapenko takes a three-match losing streak into Guadalajara to face a potential banana skin in Lauren Davis, who has been ranked as high as 26th. The world number 89 recently made the quarter-finals at the Emilia-Romagna Open and the third round of the US Open, stunning Ekaterina Alexandrova en-route, to suggest that this is not as clear-cut as it looks. The pair share a 2-2 head-to-head record after Davis knocked the Latvian out of the Madrid Masters back in May but it is hard to see Ostapenko falling so easily here. The shrewd move could well be taking Davis to earn at least a set but the sensible one remains backing Ostapenko to come through.
