World number 108 Lauren Davis put in an excellent display to beat in-form Kaja Juvan via two tiebreaks on Monday but she has had to wait a long time for a second match. The 28-year-old recently stunned Jelena Ostapenko at the Italian Open on clay but she has failed to win back-to-back matches since reaching the quarter-finals of Adelaide 2 way back in January. World number 26 Camila Giorgi beat Tereza Martincova in straight sets for a solid win on grass after she was shocked by Harriet Dart at last week’s Nottingham Open. The Italian started finding some serious form this time last year with a run to the semi-finals at Eastbourne ended by injury after beating then world number two Aryna Sabalenka.
The pair have only played one match at tour-level, with Davis taking their quarter-final at the Washington Open in 2016, but the American has dominated proceedings over the past decade in Challengers and qualifiers.
