THE PREDICTION
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas is the defending champion at the Monte-Carlo Open and he played like it on Tuesday, ousting the former champion Fabio Fognini in comprehensive straight sets. The 23-year-old was exceptional here last season, beating five players of top 30 quality including Andrey Rublev in the final without dropping a set, and after a fairly tough few months on tour the Greek should be able to play with a lesser-spotted freedom here. World number 62 Laslo Djere is a tough customer on clay and he recently took Tsitsipas to two tiebreaks in a straight-sets defeat at the Mexican Open. The 26-year-old has won both of his ATP titles on the surface, most recently at the 2020 Sardinia Open, and his straight-sets victory over 16th seed Lorenzo Sonego on Wednesday is a warning shot. Perhaps at a tournament Tsitsipas was not defending the Serb would have more of a chance at the upset but back the Greek to win in straight sets here.
