THE LOWDOWN
World number seven Casper Ruud reached a first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros back in June before a one-sided loss to his idol Rafael Nadal. The 23-year-old has added another three titles to an excellent haul of nine for his young career so far but he has never won a tournament higher than ATP 250 level, with a loss in his first Masters final coming to Carlos Alcaraz back in March. Ruud has never made it past the third round in New York.
THE PREDICTION
Former world number 14 Kyle Edmund has missed the best part of two years from the tour with a number of surgeries on his shoulder and many setbacks along the way. The 27-year-old famously reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in 2018 and he has reached the second week here in new York before defeat to Novak Djokovic in 2016. The Brit is on a very long road back to a full tour life before he can begin to think of breaking back inside the world’s top 30 and this is a hugely tough opener for only his third tour-level match this season. Ruud can often start a tournament rather sluggishly, though, and it would not be a surprise to see this match go to four sets before he comes through the outright winner.
