World number 124 Laura Pigossi will make her Grand Slam debut here at 27 years old after a strong season on tour. The Brazilian reached her first tour final back in April, shocking the likes of Dayana Yastremska and Camila Osorio before a three-set defeat to Tatjana Maria but she has since struggled to string wins together. Former world number 71 Kucova also reached her first WTA tour final recently, finishing runner-up to Maryna Zanevska at the Poland Open almost a year ago, with both players here favouring clay. This first meeting between the two is essentially guesswork with both players coming in cold without grass-court matches in their legs but Pigossi’s debut, and more recent tour success, suggests backing her to win at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through could be a reasonable way to avoid picking a winner.
