THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Beatriz Haddad-Maia fought back well to beat in-form Diane Parry in three sets on Thursday and she should be better for surviving the early scare. The 27-year-old ended 2023 as the WTA Elite Trophy champion, in singles and doubles, but she has struggled to find her best level so far in 2024 despite an excellent, typically arduous run to the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open in February.
World number 30 Katie Boulter overcame 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova in a tight first-set tiebreak before the Czech was forced to retire. The Brit, also 27, won her maiden WTA title at the Nottingham Open last summer but she eclipsed that achievement with a searing week in San Diego earlier this month, stunning the field – including Haddad-Maia – to claim a first WTA 500 trophy and break inside the top 30 for the first time. The chance of stop-start conditions in a rain-affected Miami on Saturday could well favour Boulter here, as Haddad-Maia’s renowned fight often relies more on rhythm than the Brit’s technical game, but back the Brazilian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors to leave a tight result up to chance.
