World number 51 Katerina Siniakova came back from a first-set bagel to beat Ana Konjuh on Friday in a topsy-turvy match. The 25-year-old is excellent on the clay, on which she won her first WTA title at the Bastad Open in 2017, and last season’s Roland-Garros Women’s Doubles title amongst her seasoned honours won alongside Barbora Krejcikova. Siniakova finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber at last season’s Bad Homburg Open.

World number 18 Elena Rybakina beat Oceane Dodin in straight sets on Friday for a comfortable opening match at the Madrid Open. The 22-year-old is no doubt a top 10 player of the very near future and she set a career-high of 12th earlier this year after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Adelaide 1. Rybakina famously beat Serena Williams at Roland-Garros last season to reach the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
Rybakina and Siniakova have already faced each other five times on tour with the Kazakh leading 3-2. Rybakina has won the two most recent meetings at the St. Petersburg Open and Dubai Tennis Championships back in 2020 but the pair have a win apiece on clay, with Rybakina winning in Istanbul back in 2019 and Siniakova winning a few months later at Roland-Garros. Rybakina would be coming through this match relatively comfortably on a hardcourt but this is a tougher prospect on the clay.
