THE PREDICTION

Former world number 26 Camila Giorgi set out her stall as the title favourite after handing defending champion Sloane Stephens a double bagel on Friday. The current world number 68 is yet to drop a set this week in Merida after ousting tough scrappers Mayar Sherif and Nuria Parrizas-Diaz but world number 47 Katerina Siniakova could prove her toughest foe yet as the Czech comes off another Grand Slam winning campaign in Women’s Doubles alongside Barbora Krejcikova at last month’s Australian Open. Both Krejcikova and Siniakova have enjoyed strong singles form since winning their seventh major title together and the 26-year-old handed out her own bagel on Friday in a three-set victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Giorgi’s performance against Stephens should be taken with a pinch of salt as the result cannot be totally down to the Italian’s brilliance on the day but she leads Siniakova 2-1 in their head-to-head record having won their last two encounters. Back Giorgi to win outright.
