Former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams is seeking her first win on tour since the first round of Wimbledon last season and she came close at the Citi Open recently with a three-set defeat to Rebecca Marino. The 42-year-old lost comfortably to Jil Teichmann at the Canada Masters this week and she looks set to fall in a similar fashion to a fellow former world number one in Karolina Pliskova. The 30-year-old Czech burst, finally, into some searing form in Toronto this week, blasting past in-form Amanda Anisimova, world number four Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova before losing in the semi-finals to Beatriz Haddad-Maia. Pliskova is at her best on a hardcourt and after enduring a torrid season she will savour the confidence of a deep run to improve in Cincinnati. Pliskova should have more than enough to come through in straight sets.
