THE PREDICTION

It took longer than it should have but, after a delayed start to the 2022 season through injury, former world number one Karolina Pliskova looks to be on the way back to her best. The 30-year-old dropped her first set of the tournament on Thursday, after blistering wins over Barbora Krejcikova and Amanda Anisimova, but she ultimately out-fought third-seed Maria Sakkari in the round of 16 to suggest she is suddenly a dark horse for the title. Pliskova is widely-regarded as one of, if not the best, player of this generation yet to win a Grand Slam title but she could be about to take an impressive run towards the US Open later this month, where she finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber in 2016. This is a tricky challenge for the Czech, though, as 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng continues to fast-track her rise up the WTA rankings. The Chinese prospect will set a new career-high of around 41st after ousting former champion Bianca Andreescu in three sets on Thursday, backing-up an impressive performance over Ons Jabeur.

In some ways this is Pliskova’s kindest draw yet in Toronto and yet that is exactly where she has slipped up on many occasions over the years. Taking her to win outright seems a reasonable risk but leaving this match out of an accumulator would be a smart call. Qinwen Zheng is a player with big top 20 potential, and soon.
